It was a very wet and windy day today and Ike went to a little-known part of Pembrokeshire; a small town called Neyland. Neyland has strong links with Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Brunel had originally seen Neyland as being the ideal spot to link his Great Western Railway with the transatlantic steamer ships of the time. The idea was that you would get on a train and travel with the same company from London to the USA. Brunel chose Neyland as it is on the Milford Haven Waterway, the second deepest natural harbour in the world after Sydney Harbour. Ike even got to meet the great man himself …well his statue anyway.
Ike va à Neyland. C’était une journée très pluvieuse et venteuse aujourd’hui et Ike est allé dans une partie peu connue du Pembrokeshire; une petite ville appelée Neyland. Neyland a des liens étroits avec Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Brunel avait d’abord considéré Neyland comme l’endroit idéal pour relier son Great Western Railway avec les navires à vapeur transatlantiques de l’époque. L’idée était de monter dans un train et de voyager avec la même compagnie de Londres aux États-Unis. Brunel a choisi Neyland comme cette ville est sur la voie navigable près de Milford Haven, le deuxième port naturel le plus profond dans le monde après le port de Sydney. Ike a eu la chance de rencontrer le grand homme lui-même … ou sa statue en tout cas.

Die Idee war, dass man in einen Zug stieg und mit der gleichen Firma von London in die USA reisen konnte. Brunel entschied sich für Neyland auf dem Milford Haven Waterway. Milford Haven Waterway ist der zweittiefste Naturhafen der Welt nach Sydney Harbour. Ike hat sogar den großen Mann selbst kennenlernen können … gut seine Statue sowieso.

The statue of Brunel is a replacement to the one that was stolen in 2013. Neyland marina forms part of the larger Milford Haven Port Authority. The Port of Milford Haven is known as the largest energy port in the UK and is capable of providing 30% of the natural gas used in the UK which comes into this port in the form of Liquid Natural Gas (LNG). There is also a large oil refinery run by Valero. The Irish Ferry to Rosslare also runs from Pembroke Dock providing a vital link.
