Enni Id’s home is located in central southern Finland. It is an ordinary home in every way, except that everything inside has been painted by its late occupant.
Enni Id was born in rural Padasjoki, in 1904. She was widowed aged just 22 and remarried in 1939. Although Enni loved to draw and paint, her husband did not value her work and even used her drawings to paper the walls – with the picture to the back! Enni stopped drawing and painting until after her second husband’s death in 1966.
Aged 62 Enni picked up her brushes again. By 1973 her works on canvas found fame at an exhibition in Helsinki and, after Enni’s death in 1992 her painted home was bequeathed to the local community association. Extensive conservation repairs have been made and the house is now open to the public. Here are a few photographs of the interior to whet your appetite:
