American Museum in Britain (national museum abroad)

american museum in britain

Geography Cat’s humans visited the American Museum in Britain last week, and they loved it. It’s located in Bath, Somerset and is the only museum of Americana outside of the USA.

This postcard shows the Chalices applique quilt from the Mimosa Hall Plantation in Texas. The information about the quilt at the museum suggests it was made by slaves on the plantation around 1860. However, others believe it is unlikely to have been made before 1900, decades after the emancipation of slaves there. Click here to read more about this.

Incidently, the card was torn in the post and delivered in a ‘damaged in transit’ bag.

If you were to curate a museum of your country and have it located anywhere else in the world, where would it be, and what would it contain?
